Tween Bedroom Refresh

I’m a sucker for a quick room refresh. Especially for my very own Girly-Pop who is growing up so fast. I’ll humor my kids in a lot of things and hold a super firm line on others. Don’t like dinner, then you are welcome to be hungry. Don’t like your room… ok lets do some fun stuff!

Even though I’m pretty game for a room refresh, we are also not made of money. I like the keep the big pieces of furniture neutral enough to fit into a lot of different room design concepts. She had a pretty upholstered light pink day bed, a white dresser and white drapery panels. When you look at the foundational pieces its easy for me to see a million different directions to take the space. And we have!

Also I realize this isn’t shocking news but painting the room is the fastest way to switch things up. When we moved into our house I had all the kids rooms painted a nice neutral mid-tone blue for simplicity. In the 9 years we’ve lived here, I’ve swapped out art, lamps and even the rug once to grow with her. Two years ago, the walls looked pretty banged up and I didn’t want to do a huge change in there just yet. So I kept all the furniture the same and painted a large scale pattern on the wall that was inspired by a Matisse leaf design. Its a very loose and fluid design so I felt comfortable painting it myself. I also swapped some art out with things I had in my inventory. We went in a “more is more” direction with a floral patterned wool rug (always a wool rug) and fun chinoiserie panels I found at an estate sale. I also pulled in an octagonal grey ottoman to use at her vanity and did a DIY bulletin board. The bulletin board was an epic fail and looked like garbage after about 2 months. So I cut my loss and found a nice neutral one on amazon to replace my failed attempt.

She’s grown up a lot in the following years. Like its happening so fast! She’s also at a place that I feel good about letting her make some of her own design choices for her room. She pulled together some concepts using the app “Shuffles” and they were totally different from each other! She was in total ecsticential crisis mode about which “Girl” she was. News flash sister, you don’t have to pick! You are both of those girls because you MADE both of those. I put on my designer hat and showed her how she could combine the two and she loved it. These are her boards:

When I’m working on a design, a Pinterest board is my go-to for saving all of my ideas. I have about a zillion. If you want to see what I thought about for this space, click below!
